Orison, a startup based in San Diego, California, is creating a home energy system than stores electricity when power company rates are low, and then discharges the electricity when rates are higher.  Orison’s technology platform allows the user to control when the electricity is stored and how it is used.  If there is a power grid outage, the Orison home battery system has the ability to power a home or business and ensure that the electricity is not put back online.  Using this localization strategy for energy storage, users save money and also reduce demand on the power grid during peak periods.

Orison Home Battery Storage System

Orison has set up a cloud application to link each device together so that battery management is optimized.  The app collects information on peak electricity charges, local utility pricing, weather conditions, blackouts and the user’s profile to provide the best experience.  The energy management app also shows how much money the user is saving every month on electricity.  The Orison devices do not require any special installation and can simply be unpacked and plugged in to get them working.

In March 2016, Orison completed a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that raised nearly $350,000 from more than 400 backers.  The project was launched 2 months earlier in January and exceeded its initial funding goal of $50,000 in less than 48 hours.  By February 5th the company announced a $200,000 stretch goal of being able to offer additional colors for the units.  Orison exceeded this stretch goal and another of providing a skin marketplace that offers 4 different skins for the home battery systems.

Orison was started by John Kohut and Eric Clifton.
